Business Plan Software
Anyone who has ever written any document has faced what some writers call "The Tyranny of the Blank Page". This is the situation that occurs before the first keystroke is made, the first sentence written and when the infinite possibilities presented by writing a new document become, ironically enough, restrictive. A business plan is one of the hardest documents to start. Business plan software allows the writer to start from what basically constitutes a template, freeing that writer up to fill in the blanks, as it were, and then to customize those sections to suit their needs.
No two businesses are identical and, even though there are standard expectations for business plans, not all businesses need to include the same information in their plans. Business plan software provides a framework from which to work. Those sections that need not be filled out by the business in question may simply be skipped. Those sections that apply can easily be filled in, formatted and added to the body of the report. The software allows the writer to avoid being stuck at the beginning and gives them a list of information they need to make a useful plan, a timesaving aspect of these programs.
Many business plan writers, sometimes to compensate for lacking content, try to improve the plan by excessive formatting. More often than not, this ends up being distracting, turning the document into a sugary affair with little actual substance. Using business plan software as a guide allows the writer to avoid getting sidetracked by spending too much time on the look of the report, to avoid inserting too many graphics that offer little information useful to potential sources of funding and to keep the format consistent with the most common expectations of financiers. It's a significant advantage, especially for those businesses who do not contract their writing to professionals.
Business plan software is widely available and varies in price. Generally, large-scale businesses should be willing to spend more to get software that will address all of their needs. Smaller businesses may be able to get by with simple templates that allow the writer to work from any word processor and to alter the template to their needs. Some of this software includes built-in features that allow the creation of properly-formatted references, the easy inclusion of charts and graphs and other important materials. Most of these programs are well worth the cost.
